What is acne?
Acne is a very common skin condition affecting 80% of people during their lifetime. Acne is caused by the body’s immune system and is an inflammatory response to the bacteria that lives in the skin called P.Acnes.
P.Acnes grows for the most part, in sebaceous glands, which produce oil called sebum. Many acne treatments help clear acne by cleaning the skin and clearing away excess sebum to help reduce the growth of the bacteria.
Some treatments such as antibiotics help to kill the bacteria, however these may have side effects and the bacteria can become much more resistant to the antibiotics in the long term.
What causes spots? To help patients achieve better results, many skincare specialists now recommend reducing the amount of oil in the skin (treatment known as sloughing) to create an environment which inhibits the growth of P. Acnes, combined with treatment to kill the bacteria.
P. Acnes is a bacteria which normally lives on skin. Under certain circumstances, often associated with hormonal, lifestyle or diet changes the sebaceous gland will over produce a natural oil called sebum.
As sebum production increases the spot causing bacteria, P. Acnes begin to grow and multiply rapidly.
Hair follicles may become blocked as the process continues.
The increasing amount of sebum together with the P. acnes bacteria and dead skin cells, cause a plug to form.
As the sebum and bacteria continue to grow, white blood cells move into the area and begin to fight the bacteria, this causes swelling or inflammation, causing a spot to form.
This action will continue until the white blood cells have managed to eliminate the P. acnes infection and the inflammation stops, or until the pore is unblocked and the sebum levels are reduced.
Many people try different products to treat spots only to find that nothing seems to work.
Lustre Pure Light harnesses the safe, natural blue part of the visible light spectrum. Utilizing clinically proven technology to eliminate spot-causing bacteria, it is also being gentle on skin.
Lustre Pure Light is a small, rechargeable product with slim, flexible therapy heads which target problem areas. The device is portable and treatment is delivered while the product is worn. Enabling you to go about your business in the normal manner.
How Lustre Pure Light works
Many patients find that their skin improves and their spots seem better when they have been out in the sunshine. However sunlight also contains ultraviolet (UVA-UVB) light wavelengths which can damage skin and even cause skin cancer!
Scientists have found that visible blue light at a wavelength of 420 nm does not cause damage to the skin but is effective in killing P. Acnes, the bacteria which causes acne.
Blue light has been used by dermatologists in recent years to successfully treat and eliminate acne.
Blue light therapy is the use of natural blue light from the visible light spectrum for a medical or therapeutic benefit. It has been used to treat acne for almost 40 years, Lustre Pure Light has revolutionised the technology previously used, by leading dermatologists, to make it portable and wearable.
What is blue light therapy?
Lustre Pure Light delivers therapeutic safe natural blue light at a wavelength of 420 nm. This is not in the UV spectrum of the natural light wavelength. In clinical trials blue light at 420 nm there have been no reported incidences of UV skin damage
How does blue light kill the bacteria which cause acne?
The bacteria that causes acne produce a chemical called porphyrin. When blue light at a specific wavelength is applied to this porphyrin it becomes excited. This active porphyrin has been clinically proven to destroy the bacteria.
Lustre Pure Light treatment harnesses the safe, blue part of the natural light spectrum and the technology has been clinically proven to eliminate the bacteria that cause spots while also being gentle on the skin.
Lustre Pure Light emits light at 420nm and does not contain any of the ultraviolet light, which can damage skin.
How Lustre Pure Light works – the science
Scientists have discovered that the spot causing bacteria, P. Acnes produce a normally harmless chemical called Porphyrin.
Clinical trials have proven that when safe natural visible blue light at 420 nm is shone onto the skin there is no harm to the skin itself, but the Porphyrins produced by the spot causing bacteria become excited.
When Porphyrins become excited they attach to the spot causing bacteria and begin to destroy it.
When the spot causing bacteria P. acnes has been destroyed acne begins to clear and continued blue light use can help reduce P. acnes growth and stop new spots forming.
There are no known side effects with blue light therapy which has been clinically proven to destroy P. Acnes bacteria, the bacteria which cause spots.
Many healthcare professionals now recommend that managing acne requires more than one treatment and recommend that managing the levels of sebum in the skin and reducing the bacteria levels in the skin which cause acne achieves the best results. Before using Lustre Pure Light, skin should be clean and dry and other acne treatments or make-up removed and re-applied after each Lustre Pure Light treatment session or as advised by your healthcare professional.
After each treatment session the Lustre adhesive strip should be removed and discarded. The Lustre therapy head should be cleaned using a moist cloth or cleansing wipe, a moist alcohol swap may also be used. Liquid of any description should not be allowed to enter the Lustre therapy heads or Lustre controller at any time. Do not use or attach Lustre Pure Light to the main power supply if it has ever been exposed to liquid at any time as it is electrical equipment.
